Leaked police bodycam video shows an unhinged man sucker-punching a uniformed NYPD officer in Brooklyn before pinning the officer to the ground as his partner appears to do little to stop the attack.
The video released by the Sergeants Benevolent Association shows the officer being slugged by the man on a downtown Brooklyn sidewalk Thursday.
“Another ATTACK on NYPD Cops!” the NYPD union captioned the video posted to Twitter on Saturday. “All street cops BE CAREFUL, the city is falling and YOU are the first target.”
The video starts as at least two officers confront a man outside the Bank of America near the intersection of Livingston and Court streets, according to the New York Post.
The man had been drinking and sitting on a sidewalk, blocking pedestrians, before the altercation occurred, police said.
The man in the video slugs an officer next to the one wearing the body camera before the officer and the man crash to the ground, sending a trash can flying.
The man then pins the officer to the ground and refuses to budge as the officer wearing the bodycam whacks him with a baton and pleads with him to “Get off of him!”
“Listen, get off of him! Get off of him!” the officer says as she grabs the man's jacket and continues to tap him with the baton. “Alright sir, get off. Mister... Mister come on.”
The second officer calls for backup and other officers soon arrive to help take the man into custody.
The New York Post reports that the suspect is 40-year-old Steven Haynes. He faces charges of assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct.
Haynes reportedly has dozens of prior arrests.
Some outraged officers said the officer wearing the bodycam didn't do enough to help her partner, according to the Daily News.
“This is one of the worst things I have seen in a while,” one officer told the News. “She had every right to do something if her partner was in danger, but she did next to nothing. There has to be an investigation at least.”
