NEW YORK — A Mount Vernon police officer was arrested Thursday for using excessive force on a woman while she was in custody.
Mount Vernon Police Officer Ryan Hughes was charged with reckless endangerment in the second degree.
The DA’s office says the incident happened Aug. 24, 2019 inside the Mount Vernon Police Department building.
Hughes is accused of pushing the woman in his custody into an interview room with such force that she tripped over a garbage can and stumbled across the room.
Because she was handcuffed, she was unable to break her fall with her hands and she hit a wall.
According to the DA’s office, the woman, who is in her 50s, required medical attention.
Hughes surrendered himself to the DA’s Office with his attorney Thursday and was released. He is suspended without pay and is scheduled to appear in court June 25.
