Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone on Thursday afternoon released body-camera footage and details of a confrontation in which a deputy shot and killed a man Sunday.
Deputies killed 70-year-old Rodney Liveringhouse after he came out of his home pointing a gun at the deputies. His wife had called 911 saying he was acting strangely and scaring her.
Penzone said Liveringhouse's family told investigators that he had been dealing with some psychological issues but didn't have a specific reason as to why Liveringhouse decided to approach deputies while armed.
"But unequivocally, this is one of those circumstances where someone makes a choice that they're going to confront deputies or law enforcement with intentions to force our hand — to deliver lethal force," Penzone said at a news conference.
"I wish I could tell you that we have the resources or options available. But when they unfold in this manner, our deputies are given no other choice, and that's unfortunate."
Liveringhouse's family could not immediately be reached for comment.
