OCONEE COUNTY, GA — A woman who charged at a police officer while holding a knife was shot dead in Oconee County Monday.
40-year-old Julia Anne Moss, of Athens, was killed at 11:03am at a home on Creek View Court in a neighborhood located near the intersection of U.S. Highway 441 and White Oak Road, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement released late Monday.
The GBI reported that deputies responded to a 911 call from a man who claimed a woman inside the residence had stabbed a dog and hit the man in the head with a pipe, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
A second man in the house had barricaded himself in another bedroom to avoid Moss, according to the report.
The sheriff’s office released 47 seconds of the bodycam footage worn by Cpl. Andrew Henderson, who is armed with a pistol.
Videos shows the woman screaming and throwing items in the bedroom that had been trashed.
Officers can be heard telling her “drop the knife.”
At one point, Moss can be seen rushing towards the doorway. An officer opens fire on Moss, who immediately drops to the floor.
At one point, the video shows Moss rushing toward the doorway and an officer fires five or six times at the woman, who immediately drops to the floor.
The GBI and sheriff’s office reported that Henderson and Deputy Stanley Swisher had been in the house for 17 minutes in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.
Moss was holding a knife and at some point carried a blow torch that was lit, according to officers.
Officers described Moss as in an “apparent manic state”.
Moss died at the scene despite efforts by deputies and medics using life-saving measures, officers said.
Henderson has been with the sheriff’s office for six years and is a firearms instructor trained in the use of force, according to the sheriff’s office.
A man, whose name has not been released, was treated at the scene for a wound on his head. The dog was taken to a local veterinary hospital, according to the report.
The investigation is ongoing.
