MOBILE, Alabama — A Mobile convenience store manager is fighting for his life after chasing down a man who allegedly attempted to steal three cases of beer.
It happened at the Speed Stop on Government Street. The man had to undergo emergency surgery. Speed Stop’s owner says the employee has internal bleeding and a lot of trauma.
Video shows a car pulled up near the front door of Speed Stop. Mobile police say two children were in the back seat.
Police say a man climbed out of the car and left the door open.
About a minute later, he runs out of the store with three cases of beer and tosses them to a person in the passenger seat.
A store manager chases after him and jumps on his car, wedged partially inside the driver’s door.
Moments later, the suspect drives off with the manager still on the car.
What happens next is what has the manager fighting for his life.
The suspect drives into oncoming traffic and crashes head-on into two vehicles.
The manager and the driver of a vehicle involved in the crash were both taken to local hospitals.
A witness says the suspect ran away with the two kids who were in the car’s back seat.
“There was a lady trapped inside of it. We saw a man running with two babies. He ended up handing one baby to another passerby and ran off with the other baby,” the witness said.
Mobile police say both children are okay. One was taken to the hospital to be checked, and the other is with a relative.
Mobile police found multiple beer cases in the car and returned them to the store and are looking for the alleged thief.
