Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata has died after succumbing to injuries she sustained in a bout against Terrebonne’s Marie-Pier Houle last Saturday in Montreal.
Zapata, 18, was rushed to a Montreal hospital after being knocked out by Houle at IGA Stadium. The fight was stopped at the end of the fourth round. Zapata died on Thursday, the event’s promoter Groupe Yvon Michel confirmed in a statement posted to Instagram.
“It is with great sadness and torment that we learned, from a representative of her family, that Jeanette Zacarias Zapata passed away this afternoon at 3:45 p.m. The entire team at Groupe Yvon Michel is extremely distressed by this painful announcement,” Michel shared on Twitter.
During the bout, Zapata reportedly began convulsing, and was subsequently taken to the hospital, where doctors placed the boxer in a medically-induced coma. She reportedly died with her husband, Jovanni Martinez, by her side.
