Two Filipino-manned cargo ships were hit by a bomb and shelling in the Black Sea, injuring one crew member, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said, as the war between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate.
Yasa Jupiter, a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship owned by Turkish company Yasa Holding, with 11 Filipino crew members on board was hit by a bomb off the coast of Ukraine's port city of Odessa on Thursday (February 24) just when the Russian forces started to invade the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.
The DFA said the Philippine Embassy in Ankara and the Philippine Consulate General in Istanbul immediately coordinated and touched base with Yasa Holding and confirmed that all the Filipino crew members were not hurt in the incident.
They said the seafarers have contacted their families in the Philippines.
“Teams from the Embassy and the Consulate General were present when the vessel arrived in Yalova Sefine Shipyard in Yalova, south of Istanbul, late afternoon of February 25, Turkish time, to personally speak with the Filipino seafarers,” DFA’s statement reads.
