A Georgia police officer was critically wounded after she was shot by an apparently suicidal woman Wednesday.
The shooting happened shortly after 11 p.m. as Clayton County Police Officer Demika Lloyd was responding to a call concerning a possibly suicidal woman experiencing a mental health crisis, WXIA-TV reports. It was the third separate time police responded to the house that night.
Footage from a security camera at the home shows Lloyd rushing the woman, who appeared to be holding something. Lloyd then was shot.
Following the shooting, the woman drove along Interstate 75 to Atlanta. Officers caught up with the woman, and she opened fire when they approached her car. Police returned fire, and the woman was struck.
Lloyd was taken to the hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery. The woman also was taken to the hospital in critical condition. No one else was injured in the incidents.
Lloyd has been with the department for a year and a half, and she had been assigned to an overnight shift. Police Chief Kevin Roberts said he is hopeful Lloyd fully recovers.
