Author Salman Rushdie has been taken to hospital after being attacked while on stage at an event in New York.
Indian-born British writer Rushdie, whose earlier writing led to death threats and a fatwa from the Iranian regime, was pictured lying on the ground of Chautauqua Institution's stage near the city of Buffalo in western New York.
An Associated Press reporter witnessed a man storm the stage at the Chautauqua Institution and begin stabbing Rushdie as he was being introduced.
The 75-year-old Satanic Verses author was taken or fell to the floor. A photograph from the scene shows a community safety officer and others with their hands over Rushdie’s chest and holding his legs up in the air. He was pictured being taken away in a stretcher, with an IVF drip in his arm and blood covering his torso, hands and face.
The attacker is said to have been taken in custody.
