FLAGSTAFF, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — Authorities say a man who allegedly robbed a gas station store in Flagstaff and threatened people with a screwdriver was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy on Wednesday morning.
Around 5 a.m., Flagstaff police say an officer responded to a call that a man, later identified as 51-year-old Donald Wayne Henry of Missouri, had broken a gas station window and was stealing items from the store near Highway 89 and North Cummings Street. At about the same time, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office got a report about a person threatening to stab people with a knife at a business in the same area.
Police say an arriving officer confronted Henry in the middle of an intersection. Henry was armed with a screwdriver and refused to drop it. Two CCSO deputies arrived and surrounded Henry, pointing their guns and a stun gun. “Get on the ground, dude,” said one deputy. Henry is seen in the video backpedaling into the gas station parking lot. He runs across the street, with law enforcement still pointing their weapons at him. “Stop dude, stop!” said the deputy as Henry starts walking toward the deputy. The deputy then fired his gun four times, hitting Henry. He died at the scene. No officers were hurt. This is the 26th officer-involved shooting outside of Maricopa County and the 73rd in the state in 2022.
