The Sparks Police Department (SPD) released body cam footage on Thursday of an armed man who was fatally shot by officers outside of their headquarters last week.
An investigation found that 36-year-old Jason Thorpe of Sparks fired two rounds on the property before being shot and killed by officers.
According to the video, Thorpe hid outside of the police station around 2:30 a.m. on October 18. Security camera footage shows Thorpe pointing his gun at the police station, staff working in the records division, parking lots, and employee entrances nearly 18 times over the course of 20 minutes.
Thorpe is seen on video firing one round into the air while hiding. Shortly after, police say a Sparks sergeant who was leaving the building after his shift noticed Thorpe who was armed with a gun.
After multiple verbal commands to drop the weapon, SPD says the suspect ignored the commands which prompted SWAT and Crisis Negotiators to arrive on scene.
According to officers, the negotiation lasted over two hours and 15 minutes until Thorpe finally stood up, shot a round at the station, and ran towards officers in front of him while still armed. Officers then discharged their weapons and shot Thorpe multiple times.
The SWAT team joined REMSA Tactical Emergency Medical Services (REMSA TEMS) to provide medical assistance, but Thorpe was pronounced dead on the scene.
The investigation reveals that Thorpe fired two rounds from a black 9 millimeter semi-automatic handgun. He also parked his car south of the police station at a different location and approached the headquarters on foot.
