An almost deadly interaction took place between a Florida police officer and a man from Daytona, and it was all captured on the officer's body camera.
The Daytona Beach Police Department said officers received a call just after 8 a.m. on Thursday of a suspicious person at the SUNOCO gas station at 25021 International Speedway Blvd.
When the first officer arrived they said they issued a trespass warning against the man at the request of the business, then left without incident. But, an hour later, another call came in.
The business told dispatch the man had returned to the gas station and wanted him removed in accordance to the trespass warning he had received. The Daytona Beach police officer arrived to the scene at around 9:11 a.m., that's when the body cam video captured the incident.
The officer, and a Volusia County Sheriff's Office Sergeant were both at the scene, but handling different matters. However, the police department said both the sergeant and officer made contact with the man and tried to detain him.
In the video, the VSO sergeant attempted to apprehend the man, grabbing his left arm. Police say the man resisted, starting a physical altercation.
The suspect can be seen pulling a knife out of his right pocket in the footage. The department said the man then lunged at the officer, stabbing him in the left upper jaw. The officer's body camera was knocked off and remained on the ground during the rest of the altercation.
Police said after the officer was stabbed he fired two shots at the armed man. The Daytona Beach Fire Department and EVAC medical personnel arrived to the gas station where they provided first aid to the suspect. The suspect and the officer were taken to the Halifax Hospital Daytona Beach, where the suspect was pronounced dead.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) said it will take over the investigation. The DBPD is expected to make a full recovery.
