Taylor Parker, 29, has been sentenced to death by a Texas jury for the horrific murder of Reagan Simmons-Hancock, a pregnant woman she knew. The jury deliberated for just over an hour before reaching their decision. Parker was convicted of capital murder for the 2020 slaying, in which she cut the unborn baby from Simmons-Hancock's womb, resulting in the death of both the mother and the baby.
During the trial, it was revealed that Parker went to extreme lengths to fake her own pregnancy in an attempt to keep her boyfriend. She even staged ultrasounds and held a gender-reveal party. On the day of the killing, Parker watched a video on the physical exam of a premature infant at 35 weeks.
In a heartbreaking statement to the court, Jessica Brooks, Simmons-Hancock's mother, addressed Parker as an "evil piece of flesh demon," expressing the pain and anguish caused by the loss of her daughter and grandchild.
Prosecutors argued that Parker posed a danger to society, pointing out the brutal nature of the crime. Simmons-Hancock was subjected to multiple slash wounds and beatings in addition to having her baby forcibly taken from her. The prosecution presented a crime scene photo showing Simmons-Hancock covered in blood.
Parker's defense attorney acknowledged her actions but urged the jury to consider the complexities of her life, emphasizing her humanity. He also mentioned that Parker lacked a support system and was let down by friends and family who failed to address her deceit.
The judge, after hearing the victim impact statements, ordered Parker to be taken to death row. This tragic case has shocked the community and serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of such heinous crimes.
