On Monday, hundreds of patrons gathered at Leimert Park (Los Angeles) to partake in a Juneteenth celebration to honor the African Americans who were emancipated in the mid-1860s. The annual festival is one of the most prominent Juneteenth celebrations in the country, dating back several decades before it was officially recognized by the U.S. government. Some of the A-list celebrities who were scheduled to perform included Too $hort, Wale, and two-time Grammy Award winner Jasmine Sullivan. The cheerful event was cut short when numerous stampedes broke out.
After the crowds dispersed, a group of teens headed into a McDonald's restaurant on Crenshaw Blvd. What could have been a routine visit turned into an all-out raid, resulting in food being thrown at McDonald's employees, vandalism, a cash register being stolen, and more. Eventually, the McDonald's staff gave up and simply retreated.
