Rio de Janeiro Brazil: A shocking tragedy struck Rio de Janeiro when André Chapeta, 50, died on Friday, December 8, due to severe burns suffered after being set on fire by his wife, Ana María Paixaõ , in the fish market they both owned. .
Last Monday, December 4, a surveillance camera captured the dramatic moment when Paixaõ, apparently driven by jealousy , sprayed Chapeta with a flammable liquid while he was sitting at a table inside the market. Without warning, Paixaõ lit a lighter, unleashing a terrifying scene as flames engulfed Chapeta.
Wounded and engulfed in fire, Chapeta ran into the fish market warehouse. He was rushed to the Getúlio Vargas Hospital, where he received treatment for burns that covered 92 percent of his body. Sadly, on Friday morning, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
On Thursday morning, Paixaõ was detained by authorities, but her release overnight raised eyebrows as a judge did not approve an arrest warrant against her. Flávio Ferreira, head of the Civil Police, shared his belief that the incident was motivated by jealousy.
The couple, who shared a 30-year relationship, according to the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police, was marked by episodes of domestic violence. Paixaõ, in her statement to investigators, claimed to have been beaten before setting Chapeta on fire, claiming self-defense. However, the authorities rejected this version.
Flávio Ferreira highlighted the discrepancies between Paixaõ's version and the images captured by the security cameras. "What she says is not what the image shows. The image shows the victim sitting in a chair. She arrives, coldly, throws the liquid at him and sets him on fire," said Ferreira. "He was sitting down and posed no risk to his physical integrity at the time," he added.
The Police continue to carry out an exhaustive investigation to clarify the exact reasons behind this tragic event. The authorities seek to ensure that justice is done in this case.
