A man tried kidnapping a fifth-grade student in broad daylight in Glendale, Arizona as the child was walking to school.
Shortly after the incident, police arrested 37-year-old Joseph Ruiz who had a known criminal history which included being convicted of aggravated assault where he stabbed his mom in the neck.
The incident happened before 8 am on Friday after the girl had just left her house to walk to school.
After she ran away, three other students came to her aid.
"They hid her because the man was chasing her," said a sibling and cousin of the children who helped the 5th grader.
"I think they were very brave for their age. I’m telling them all day, like you’re heroes."
