A Memphis police officer was killed in a shootout by a teenager who had just been released from custody.
Officer Joseph McKinney, 26, died in the early hours of Friday morning, in Memphis, Tennessee. The 18-year-old male suspect was also killed during the incident.
The deceased suspect, Jaylen Lobley, had been arrested just last month for possessing an illegal weapon but was released without bond, according to law enforcement officials.
Another officer sustained injuries but is currently in stable condition, while a third officer was grazed by a bullet during the exchange of gunfire.
A 7-year-old suspect was wounded but is expected to recover, according to police.
Lobley was reportedly arrested and released without bond in March after he was allegedly found with an illegally modified semi-automatic weapon.
He was also charged with stealing two vehicles and allegedly had a programming device used to steal cars.
In a press conference Friday, Interim Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn 'C.J.' Davis described the incident which unfolded as officers responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle nine miles south of Downtown Memphis.
When the cops approached the car, they were met with gunfire from inside the vehicle, which led the officers to return fire.
The suspect's car fled the scene, leading to a car chase.
The car was eventually stopped and one suspect was arrested while the second attempted to escape but was later taken into custody.
