A group of protesters had gathered at Portage Avenue and Main Street to demonstrate after the Winnipeg Police Service announced on Tuesday that officers had struck and killed a woman with a vehicle at a homeless encampment. Officers were providing a ride home to a person who lives in the encampment in Fort Rouge Park off of River Avenue when the collision occurred. The victim was a woman in her 30s, police say.
Portage and Main was shut down by the protest at Noon. That's when witnesses allege that a large red car drove around a police barricade and through the crowd. They say the car then turned around and attempted to go back through the crowd when it was swarmed by protesters who jumped on the vehicle.
Witnesses allege the car hit a cyclist. Members of the Police Liaison Team spoke with the cyclist, who declined medical attention and further police involvement. All other protesters involved in this matter left prior to police arrival. The driver of the involved vehicle remained at the scene.
Pictures circulating on social media show a car matching the witness's description stopped in the westbound curb lane of Portage Avenue East. It's windshield is shown to be smashed out in many of the photos.
