ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- On Friday, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office charged 35-year-old Edward Will Booker III with six counts stemming from a domestic violence call Thursday morning.
The Mishawaka Police Department says officers were called to the 220 block of East 8th Street in Mishawaka around 10:56 a.m. on May 22 for reports of Booker beating his ex-girlfriend, who shares one child with Booker and is eight months pregnant with a second.
Once on scene, officers were advised that Booker had been beating the woman since an argument started the night before, and that he had her locked in a room and would not let her out.
When approached, Booker locked the door to the residence and would only communicate by shouting through the door. The owner of the residence, Booker's mother, granted authorities access to the home.
"While the officers were entering, Booker exited the apartment through a back window and fled on foot. Officer commanded him to stop but Booker fled before they could take him into custody," officers said.
A little ways away, in the area of Summit and 9th Streets, police recovered a cellphone that had a lock screen with picture of Booker and a child.
Authorities say the victim had multiple visible injuries including both eyes swollen shut.
"She was bruised and bloody with marks on her body consistent with strangulation as well as large bruises on her abdomen and sides," the report states.
"[She] refused medical attention at the scene. She stated that she did not recall anything that had occurred in the prior 24 hours. The Danger Assessment for Law Enforcement (DA-LE) was conducted and [the victim's] answers indicated that she was at risk. Despite this, [she] refused the referral to the YWCA."
Other residents of the house told authorities Booker has a long history of violence against the victim and that Booker was sending them videos of the victim bloody in the bathroom. In at least one video, Booker could be heard threatening the victim, stating that he would "beat her *** again."
Booker was charged with:
