EAST HARTFORD — The young theft suspect was polite, saying “sir,” as he talked to two East Hartford police officers about a report of a dine and dash at a nearby restaurant.
But he resisted an officer’s efforts to pat him down and ran, a decision that ended with him being fatally shot.
This was not a police shooting, however: The 17-year-old shot himself, police said, and body-camera footage showed it wasn't an officer who pulled the trigger. How exactly the gun discharged was not clear as of Tuesday.
Sources identifed the Hartford teenager as Jakhi Perry, and he died of "a gunshot wound of his right lower extremity, with injury of femoral artery and vein," the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said late Tuesday morning. The circumstances and manner of the shooting death remain under investigation, the office said.
