Two roads buckled in Cape Girardeau, as a heatwave impacted Missouri on Sunday, June 22. Albert Blackwell recorded the moment a portion of Siemers Drive suddenly snapped, sending a car flying.
Before it buckled, Blackwell told Storyful he had been filming a bulge in the road but wanted a better angle. “When I went back to get a front angle of cars going over the smaller buckle, the road exploded and rose over 18 inches, sending a car airborne,” Blackwell said.
The City of Cape Girardeau reported that another road also buckled due to the ongoing heatwave. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures were expected to rise above 100 degrees every day throughout Friday.
“With more high temperatures expected this week, the city may experience more street buckling due to the heat,” the city warned, asking motorists to drive carefully and be mindful of crews repairing the streets.
