Legendary Oakland football coach John Beam, known for his part in Netflix's "Last Chance U," was shot and killed in what police are calling a "targeted" incident.
The incident reportedly happened at the football facility on Laney College's campus.
Cedric Irving Jr. was taken into custody in connection with the shooting.
According to Oakland Acting Police Chief James Beere, Irving knew of Beam and allegedly went to the campus "for a specific reason."
The pair reportedly did not have a prior relationship, but the suspect knew of Beam, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
"Beam, 66, spent more than four decades shaping Bay Area athletes and transforming Laney College into a powerhouse program that became a symbol of grit and opportunity in Oakland," the SF Chronicle reported.
