A young woman strapped into bungee jumping equipment is hoisted by three people high above an overpass. From there, she is thrown into the void.
From another angle, the jump appears to be under control. Still, when the elastic cord reaches its limit, the young woman is pulled forcefully upwards and hits her head violently on the underside of the overpass. The noise is impressive.
The image was captured in early October, but has been circulating on social media in recent days. The young woman is Tathiane Rosa Costa, 26 years old. She says she had never done a bungee jump before, and that a friend invited her to do the jump from the Sumaré viaduct, in the West Zone of São Paulo.
She agreed, put on the protective equipment, and followed the instructions given by the company instructors. "I followed exactly what they told me. And then one of the people instructed me to do the 'airplane' position, which is where I'm with my arms outstretched. People lift me up and I'm face down, so it increases the adrenaline a bit more because I go down upside down. And I said, 'okay, all right.'"
Tathiane says she felt the impact "quite a lot" and that she wasn't helped by the team that provided the service. "I don't know what happened during the jump. The moment I hit my head, I felt the impact quite a lot and my head started to hurt. But I didn't pass out, probably because I was still high on adrenaline."
She says that what happened serves as a warning to other people interested in practicing the sport in that location. "I'm warning about my accident, that accidents happen in that place." The young woman went to the doctor and will have a CT scan to make sure she didn't suffer any more serious injuries.
In a statement, the São Paulo City Hall says that activities such as rappelling and bungee jumping on the Sumaré Avenue viaduct are prohibited, and that the Lapa sub-prefecture, with the support of the Metropolitan Civil Guard, conducts periodic inspections.
