New York Home Health Aide Caught On Cam Beating A Severely Disabled Child, Now Under Arrest
24 days ago
A New York home health aide is facing criminal charges following allegations that he assaulted a young child with severe disabilities while assigned to provide in-home care, authorities announced.
Bruno Valenzuela, 31, is accused of striking 5-year-old Maverick, a child living with cerebral palsy, during a caregiving visit on December 20. Investigators say Valenzuela forcefully hit the child on the back and chest, actions that allegedly left visible bruising.
Maverick, who requires extensive medical assistance due to his condition, was later taken to Stony Brook Hospital for evaluation. Medical staff documented injuries consistent with physical trauma, which triggered a report to authorities and launched a formal investigation.
Law enforcement officials say the case raises serious concerns given the child’s vulnerability and dependence on caregivers for daily support and safety. Prosecutors allege the actions occurred while Valenzuela was acting in a position of trust inside the child’s home.
Valenzuela has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and endangering the welfare of a physically disabled or incompetent person. He has not publicly commented on the allegations, and it is unclear whether he has entered a plea.
The case has drawn renewed attention to oversight within the home health care system, where aides often work one-on-one with patients behind closed doors. Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Valenzuela is expected to appear in court at a later date as the legal process moves forward.
