83-Year-Old Man Who Killed An Uber Driver Because He Mistakened Her For A Scammer Get Convicted Of Murder

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — An Ohio man in his eighties has been found guilty of murder for fatally shooting an Uber driver after both were ensnared in a scam that ended in tragedy.
William J. Brock, 83, believed the driver was part of a plot to steal $12,000 in bond money for a relative, authorities said. Acting on that mistaken assumption, he shot the woman, who had unwittingly been drawn into the same phone scam.
Investigators explained that the victim had been instructed by scammers to pick up a package at Brock’s home, located roughly halfway between Dayton and Columbus. She was performing a routine delivery when the deadly misunderstanding occurred.
The case highlights the dangerous consequences of increasingly sophisticated scams and how they can spiral into real-world violence. Brock now faces the legal repercussions for what authorities say was a fatal misjudgment.
