Terrifying Moment A Truck Hauling An Excavator Hit An Overpass, Causing A Giant Metal Beam To Crash On The Highway, Killing A Driver Of A Car That Crashed Full Speed Into It
22 days ago
A routine drive along a Southern California freeway turned deadly after a construction load struck an overpass, sending debris crashing into traffic below.
Authorities say a Kenworth semi-truck hauling a flatbed with an excavator struck a metal beam while passing beneath an Interstate 15 overpass near the 10 Freeway. The impact dislodged the beam, which fell onto vehicles traveling below, triggering a fatal chain of events.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fallen beam landed on two passenger vehicles, killing a woman at the scene and seriously injuring a man. Both victims were transported to a nearby medical center, where the woman later died from her injuries.
The 50-year-old truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, CHP said. Authorities do not suspect alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, and no arrests have been announced.
Investigators are now focused on how the excavator was secured and whether the load exceeded clearance limits for the overpass. Accidents involving oversized or improperly secured loads are rare but often catastrophic, particularly when elevated infrastructure is involved.
The crash forced temporary closures along portions of the freeway system as crews worked to remove debris and inspect the overpass for structural damage. Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims, pending notification of family members.
The incident underscores the risks posed by heavy equipment transport on busy urban freeways—where a single miscalculation can have deadly consequences for drivers who never see it coming.
