A New Jersey man who turned a late-night argument into a near-fatal ambush has been handed 17 years behind bars — and he didn’t go quietly.
Tyshaun Watson, 36, of Secaucus, was sentenced Thursday in a tense New York courtroom for a savage 2024 attack at a Manhattan pizzeria that left a manager fighting for his life. The hearing quickly devolved into a heated back-and-forth between Watson and the judge, with the defendant repeatedly interrupting as she dismantled his version of events.
The assault happened in August 2024 inside Roma Pizza on Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron District. Surveillance footage captured Watson moving behind the counter and unleashing a brutal attack that involved a dog, turning a routine shift into a scene of chaos.
The victim, Zakaria El Sherif, 47, suffered catastrophic injuries and was placed in a medically induced coma following the attack.
Watson initially faced attempted murder and multiple assault charges, but cut a deal with prosecutors, pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree assault — a felony — in exchange for reduced exposure. The agreement still landed him with 17 years in state prison followed by five years of supervised release.
During sentencing, Watson argued he had taken responsibility by remaining at the scene and claimed the video showed El Sherif acting aggressively, insisting he was trying to calm the situation down.
The judge wasn’t buying it.
She told Watson she had reviewed the footage and said it clearly showed him going around the counter to attack the employee. As Watson continued to interject, the judge warned that his comments suggested he wasn’t actually accepting responsibility at all.
At one point, she issued a blunt ultimatum: she would play the video in open court, and if it matched her description, she would revoke the plea deal entirely and send the case to trial.
The video was never played — and the plea stood.
Watson was led away in handcuffs, the sentence final. For El Sherif, the scars remain. For Watson, the argument is over.
