What started as a routine response to a possible DUI ended in a frightening and very real collision Saturday evening in Montebello.
According to authorities, Montebello police officers were rushing to a report of a suspected drunk driver near Montebello Boulevard and Victoria Avenue around 5:38 p.m. But while heading to that call, one of the patrol vehicles struck a pedestrian who was legally crossing the street.
The crash happened as the police unit traveled eastbound on Beverly Boulevard at Howard Avenue. The pedestrian was walking in the crosswalk when the patrol car entered the intersection.
Investigators say the officer behind the wheel attempted to swerve south to avoid the person in the roadway—but there wasn’t enough time.
The result: the front bumper of the police vehicle hit the pedestrian.
The California Highway Patrol, which is handling the investigation, confirmed the pedestrian was rushed to a local hospital with major injuries. As of Monday afternoon, the victim was listed in critical but stable condition.
The incident has raised uncomfortable questions about split-second decisions, emergency responses, and who ultimately bears the risk when urgency meets a busy intersection. One call, one moment, and a routine evening changed instantly.
The investigation remains ongoing.
