A Chilean track cyclist was involved in a horror crash with a starting gate that had not been removed from the track at a velodrome in Santiago. Footage of the incident shows Irene Aravena being led out by her teammate Estefania Nunez when an official begins waving a red flag to signify a false start. Aravena, unsighted by Nunez and the flag waving official and unaware of the false start, collides with the gate, flipping violently before coming to a stop. The cyclist was immediately taken to hospital where she underwent surgery on fractures to her knee cap and leg. The Chilean team were forced to retire from the race, with the Brazilian team finishing as the bronze medallists at the event.
