A woman is in custody after an incident Wednesday at a Stillwater elementary school.
The Stillwater Police Department says that at approximately 7:45 a.m. March 30 Westwood Elementary was put on lockdown. Police say a woman of Middle Eastern descent approached the school administrative office and said she was "there to take the kids to heaven". Witnesses say a wire could be seen from the woman's purse. The school was then evacuated to a nearby tech center. Police arrived on scene and took the woman into custody.
Police say the matter is now a mental health concern and the woman is undergoing a mental health exam. The woman's name has not been released and police say she did not have any children at the school. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol examined the woman's purse and determined it was safe. Anyone living within one block of Westwood Elementary was also evacuated as police investigated the scene.
Stillwater Interim Superintendent Gay Washington said over 500 students were evacuated quickly and safely from the building following the incident.
