Umpire in game between Angels and Athletics leaves after he is hit in head with bat (WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT) There was a scary moment in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday between the Angels and Athletics when home plate umpire Paul Emmel was hit in the head with a loose bat. Angels pinch-hitter Jefry Marte lost control of his swing and the bat flew over his shoulder and hit Emmel in the head, leaving a fairly large gash in his head. Emmel dropped to his knees with his head bloodied as trainers from both teams rushed onto the field. Emmel was able to get up on his feet and walk off the field as the trainers held a towel to his head to control the bleeding. He presumably went to a hospital for further treatment. The umpire crew worked shorthanded for the remainder of the inning.
