Mohimanul Alam Bhuiya was living the American dream. He came from a decent home in NYC, received a good education, even getting accepted to Columbia University, the world was his oyster.
So like any other American with such a golden future, what did Mohimanul do with his opportunities? Well he joined the most brutal, homicidal terrorist organization ever created of course.
After dropping out of Columbia University, Bhuiya became obsessed with Jihadi propaganda online. His activities came to the FBI’s attention in June 2014, concerned that he might try to travel to Syria , the Joint Terrorism Task Force in New York paid him a visit, the Post said, citing court documents.
He told the task force that he was interested in the terror groups activities but would never actually join them abroad. A few days later, he hopped on a flight to Istanbul, got into Syria and joined the Islamic State.
Less than a couple months later, Bhuiya sent this desperate letter to the FBI:
“I am an American who’s trying to get back home from Syria,†he wrote in his email, according to federal court documents unsealed last month. “I just want to get back home. All I want is this extraction, complete exoneration thereafter, and have everything back to normal with me and my family.â€
He added: “I am fed up with this evil.â€
After he managed to escape back into Turkey, Bhuiya turned himself in at the U.S. consulate.
