On Friday, June 9, 2016, there were several police interventions at Gelsenkirchen central station in the historic district due to violent confrontations from 3.30 pm into the evening hours. Groups of different sizes, which consisted of members of large Lebanese families, deliberately tried to provoke immigrants in the area around the central station. There were insults and assaults. The Police intervened heavily and consistently against troublemakers and was thereby able to calm the individual situations. The Police inspected numerous people, identified them, and initiated criminal proceedings. An ambulance drove one individual to a local hospital for inpatient treatment. At about 8 pm, two police officers inspected two aggressive males. During the inspection, a group of about 40 persons formed and massively tried to interfere with police measures. The Police called in support, dispersed the group, and arrested two individuals. The Police has initiated investigations as to the background of the confrontations.
