 A Texas sheriff's deputy was killed after confronting two burglars in his backyard early Monday.
Police said Craig Hutchinson, a Travis County sergeant was shot in Round Rock, 15 miles north of Austin, at approximately 1:30 a.m. The deputy had used his law enforcement radio to call for help after confronting two burglars in his backyard shed.
When officers arrived, they found Hutchinson, critically wounded in his backyard, with equipment stolen from his shed, sheriff Greg Hamilton said at a press conference on Monday morning.
He was rushed to the Round Rock Hospital, where he died from the fatal wounds. Austin police temporarily shut down the highway to transport the veteran officer's body from the hospital to the medical examiner's office.
