An Indonesian man whose official documentation suggests he was born 145 years ago could be the latest contender for the world record of oldest human being, according to a local television report.
Indonesian records officials have confirmed the age of Mbah Gotho as 145, which is 23 years older than current title-holder, 122-year-old Jeanne Calment, the Independent UK reports.
Mr Gotho, who said he has been making preparations for his death since 1992 and had bought his tombstone 20 years ago, told Indonesian television news program Liputan6 he had outlived his 10 siblings, four wives and all his children.
His claims that he was born in 1870 are yet to be independently verified.
Over the past three months, Mr Gotho said his declining health had left him unable to wash or eat independently.
"What I want is to die," he reportedly told Liputan6.
Mr Gotho has not attributed any particular lifestyle choices to his claimed longevity, and video shows him smoking a cigarette.
