A drive to church took a turn down the highway to hell for a 79-year-old woman.
Police say three men driving a black car similar to a Monte Carlo, pulled alongside the victim near Riverview Boulevard and Orchid just before 11:00 a.m Sunday. According to police, one of the men leaned out of his window and yelled to the elderly victim, before throwing an explosive into her rear window.
Police say the woman felt flames and was able to get out of the vehicle uninjured. Larry Middlebrook was one of the first people there to help.
"I ran over to see was she okay and to see if any other passengers were in the car" said Middlebrook. "She said, my bible is in the car- and I said why don’t we move back away from it and when we moved away from the car, that’s when it exploded and went bang, bang, boom and it was engulfed in flames" Middlebrook said.
District Two Alderwoman Dionne Flowers says the crime is a textbook definition of senseless violence.
"Disgust, sickness, sadness, that they targeted an elderly person, it’s something that the city needs to know and that people are really, really pulling for this lady" said Flowers. "To target someone like that on that type of day, on a Sunday- I don’t understand that. I don’t understand the mentality of someone who can do that" Flowers said.
Police are still looking for who’s responsible, but Alderwoman Flowers has this warning for all residents:
"I just want everyone to be aware that this can happen whether it’s north, south or central and you should be alert to it" she said.
