The 49-year-old victim was killed by the southbound train that barreled into the 42nd Street station at 1:20 p.m.
Witnesses told cops that seconds earlier the victim and another woman had been arguing on the platform before the shove took place.
Hours passed before the body was removed from the tracks, as crime scene investigators gathered evidence and processed the body. The victim was not immediately identified by police. Melanie Turner, 30, of Queens, was taken into custody, sources said. Cops also quizzed witnesses at the Midtown South precinct station house.
“What happened here is tragic,” said Transit Chief Joseph Fox. “A woman was pushed to her death in front of an incoming 1 train. We have a person of interest that was apprehended by Transit Bureau police officers, who were assigned to the platform.”
Manhattan Chief of Detectives William Aubrey said detectives were looking for surveillance video of the incident and of the victim and the suspect entering the station. “It’s a horrible incident, and your heart goes out to this family and this victim, and also to the people that were on that platform,” Aubrey said. “The people they were on that platform did exactly what we wanted them to do — they saw something, and they said something, and they saw this woman push another woman, and they flagged down two police officers that were standing on the platform. “
