Footage has been released of just that happening on a building site in China.
The clip begins with a digger hacking away at the walls of the apartment block.
The video appears to suggest he may have still been working when the devastating collapse occurred.
Shocked viewers were quick to show their concerns.
One said: “I hope the excavator operator is OK.”
And another commented: “That’s a stupid way to demolish a building. Half of the block ground columns were broken down first?”
It is not the first time an attempted building demolition has gone terribly wrong.
