TAMPA — The University of South Florida student who said she was robbed on the Tampa campus made up the story, according to USF police.
Fatou Gueye, 19, was arrested Wednesday night on a charge of making a false report, according to jail records. She was released from a Hillsborough County jail Thursday morning after paying $500 bail.
Police said Gueye is also part of another investigation: A group of four students who reported receiving threatening messages inside their dorms on election night, Nov. 8. Police did not provide the exact wording of the threats, but said they were racially charged and vowed death if Hillary Clinton defeated Donald Trump. Several students also reported graffiti on campus that said "Trump 2016, MAGA (Make America Great Again), you gotta go back."
USF police reported that Gueye claimed she was robbed by two men in their 20s, who forced her to give them her jewelry. Gueye told police the men "slapped her face," according to her arrest report. She also told police the men removed her backpack, sweater and necklace, the report said. All of her items were recovered at the scene.
Gueye later admitted she "willingly provided false information" to police, the report said.
Gueye is a business administration major from Senegal on Africa's west coast, according to her student profile on the USF website and her identification card.
