Newly released body camera videos from the Cleveland Division of Police show the moments law enforcement caught up with a 14-year-old juvenile suspect one officer wound up shooting amid an investigation into a recent string of car break-ins.
The footage from the Dec. 14 incident begins with police demanding the suspect show his hands as they approach a white Kia Sportage parked in an East 146th Street driveway. As they close in on the teen, the video shows what appears to be the 14-year-old sleeping in the driver's seat of what was alleged to be a stolen car.
Officers attempted to get his attention by striking the vehicle as they ordered him to "put your hands up." Moments later, the suspect wakes up, and as police attempt to get the teen out of the car, he instead places the car in reverse before hitting the garage.
The incident quickly took a turn from there, as footage shows the suspect shifting the car back into drive and appearing to attempt to drive towards the officers. That's when a Cleveland officer shoots him, striking him once in the shoulder before the car stops.
Officers then arrested the teen before transporting him to an area hospital, where he was treated for what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been discharged.
The incident came hours after Cleveland police say they began an investigation into more than 30 new car break-ins around the Midtown neighborhood. Authorities identified at least two juvenile suspects who were arrested for related crimes before allegedly cutting off the ankle monitors they were supposed to be wearing.
The officer who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy, as the shooting is investigated by the Cleveland Division of Police Use of Force Investigation Team. The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office tells 3News the teen is currently facing several charges, including felonious assault, improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, and receiving stolen property.
