College teacher fired, sparks outrage after making students slap each other

A two-minute-long video showing a college teacher abusing his students and ordering them to slap each other has caused uproar in China recently. In the video, at least 13 students are seen standing outside a classroom, as a college teacher orders them to slap each other across the face. He even slaps some of the students himself when he feels they did not slap each other well enough.

The video, which emerged online on Thursday, was filmed at Hexi University in Zhangye city, western China’s Gansu Province. The students were apparently being punished for turning up late to an evening class. On Friday, Gansu Provincial Department of Education announced that the teacher, surnamed Lv, had been fired. The teacher also apologized publicly for his improper behavior, and asked the students to not hate him for this.

However, netizens are not so willing to forgive him. Many expressed their anger online, not only rebuking the teacher but also the silent students.
