9 Crew Members Saved After Cargo Ran Aground

The general cargo vessel Cabrera sank after grounding in Aegean Sea at the coast of Andros Island, Greece. The vessel was en route to Finland with cargo of iron or steel, but was caught by storm and grounded by treacherous weather conditions.

The ship suffered breaches below the water line and started getting water ingress. The crew reported the accident to the local authorities and requested immediate evacuation due to danger from capsizing and developing list.

At the scene of the grounding was send Greek Navy helicopter, where were evacuated all the nine crew members without reported injuries.

The general cargo vessel Cabrera is hardly stuck and continue developing list, which grew to more than 45 degrees. According to local authorities the ship might be considered as total loss.

The cargo ship ran aground in bad weather and heavy seas, probably after engine or other technical failure. The vessel hardly stuck into the rocks of Andros Island.

The grounding caused breaches of the hull and damages of some fuel tanks. Unknown quantity of oil leaked into the water, forming water pollution and oil sheen with area of approximately 500 sq m. The hazmat team was informed about the accident, but hampered to respond due to bad weather and strong winds.
