After having been dormant for eight months Mount Etna on the east coast of Sicily came back to life, as could been seen in timelapse footage recorded on Tuesday.
Smoke was rising from the mouth of the volcano and several small strombolian explosions occurred. This is common behaviour for Mount Etna, according to volcanologist Boris Behncke at the Etnean Observatory of the INGV.
Etna is Europe’s largest volcano, and among the most active on earth. It has four craters on its summit, where volcanic activity can take place continuously for several years or even decades.
