Sunday's 2017 Wuxi International Marathon ended in a comedy of errors as the front two runners sprinted to the wrong finish line, allowing the third place runner to calmly run to the correct finish line and claim victory.
At the end of a grueling 42.2 kilometer long marathon in east China's Jiangsu Province, the two leading Ethiopian runners were neck and neck and so they sprinted the last 100 meters to the "finish line" but they misidentified the correct finish. Their mistake enabled the Bahrain runner in third place to win.
This video of the race has gone viral online on China's social media platforms . Some netizens complain that, "How could the sponsor set a 90-degree turn in the last 100 meters? The signal is not obvious at all! The sponsor should shoulder the responsibility!"
A Weibo user @GuardianshipLong teased that "life is like a marathon, never mind about those in front of you, just carry on, maybe they will run into the wrong direction!" And some netizens said, "Choosing the right direction matters more than hard work!"
