A video showing a man slapping his daughter continuously in Daqing, Heilongjiang Province, recently went viral online. In the video, the man suddenly began beating his five-year-old daughter while she was sleeping. He then uploaded the video online, and aroused the anger of thousands of netizens.
The police carried out an investigation immediately. The man, named Jiang, was arrested and confessed, claiming that he wanted to show the video to his ex-wife and beg her to come back to him.
The man was detained for 15 days, and his ex-wife took custody of their daughter.
The story has provoked sharp reactions on social media in China. Many netizens have expressed deep outrage at the alleged abuse.
According to data reported by the official Xinhua News Agency, among domestic abuse cases in China in 2014, 88.3% involved husbands abusing their wives, 7.5% involved a parent abusing children, and 1.3% involved children abusing their elderly parents.
The newly-introduced anti-domestic violence law seeks to offer victims a redress mechanism and, more importantly, covers both physical and psychological abuse at home.
