Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) tore apart anti-Trump protesters over their opposition to Supreme Court Nominee Neil Gorsuch at a town hall in Charleston Saturday.
“I will vote for him because I cannot think of a better person a Republican president could have chosen,” Graham said as protesters shouted Merrick Garland’s name at him.
“Merrick Garland,” Graham started. “When I hear a Democrat complain about Merrick Garland, almost to me, it’s like an arsonist complaining about a fire.”
Graham explained that since the election season had already been in full swing, it would have been inappropriate to consider a Supreme Court nominee with the voters weighing in.
Graham read from then-Senator Joe Biden’s 1992 comments in which Biden said, “It would be our pragmatic conclusion that once the political season is underway, and it is, action on a Supreme Court nomination must be put off until after the election campaign is over.”
“You’re blinded by your own partisanship,” Graham said to protesters opposed to Gorsuch’s nomination.
Graham promised to confirm Gorsuch using “whatever’s necessary,” including the so-called “nuclear” option of removing the filibuster.
Protesters continued to “boo” Graham throughout his remarks, but Graham fired back.
“You want to set the election aside because you can’t accept the results. That’s your problem, not mine,” Graham said to the crowd.
Protesters then started to screech about the FBI investigation into Trump-Russia connections, but Graham noticed that the Democrats did not have to seem to have a problem with the investigation into Hillary Clinton.
“Every Republican that I know of would have picked this man because he’s highly qualified,” Graham said.
“I’m not going to allow President Trump to be denied the same opportunity that every president’s had for 200 years because you’re mad, and you can’t accept the outcome of an election.”
