In the wake of a Detroit-area physician being arrested and charged for mutilating two young girls’ genitalia, two more people were arrested in conjunction with the case on Friday, including another doctor. Dr. Fakhruddin Attar was arrested by federal agents for allowing Dr. Jumana Nagarwala to utilize his clinic to perform the mutiliations. Dr. Attar’s wife, Farida Attar, was also arrested and has been accused of assisting Nagarwala with the mutilations. Per the criminal complaint, it is alleged that the three are involved in a conspiracy to perform the mutilations as part of a religious and cultural practice. All three are part of the Dawoodi Bohra religious community within the area. (Dawoodi Bohra is a sect of Shia Islam based out of India.)
Dr. Attar’s defense attorney, Mary Charter, told reporters that he “is not aware of any crimes committed at his clinic… This is frightening for them and terrifying.” Currently, Nagarwala is being held without bond after being charged in federal court on April 12th. She potentially faces life in prison. The Attars have been charged with conspiracy to commit female genital mutilation and aiding and abetting.
