Scores of migrants were taken away in police vans in Milan, Tuesday, as part of a large police crackdown on a makeshift migrant camp erected in a square in front of the city's central rail station.
The police reportedly used sniffer dogs during the search operation. The migrants were ordered to get rid of all sharp objects as they were forced onto police vans after being stringently searched. The nearby Piazza Duca d'Aosta station was shut down, and the station was guarded by dozens of police officers.
The arrival of the migrants follows a wave of people, many from conflict zones, trying to enter Italy and other southern European states from Northern Africa, a journey which costs each migrant thousands of euros and can be severely dangerous.
