Football hooligans have caused a nationwide stir after they threw a firework bomb at a ball boy from their own team and caused him to run across the pitch crying.
A ball boy, only identified as 13-year-old Jens, was on duty for the Dutch second division match between home side FC Den Bosch and FC Dordrecht, the Southern Dutch outfit's last home game of the season.
Yet his evening during last weekend's match was ruined in brutal fashion when hardcore Den Bosch fans suddenly started to light up flares and threw firework bombs onto the pitch.
Video footage shows Jens quickly running away from the opposite side of the pitch after a large explosion, as the referee blew his whistle to temporarily suspend the match.
The youngster had a ball in his right hand and put his left hand in front of his ear after the firework bomb exploded in close proximity of him. He walked away from the scene with tears streaming down his cheeks.
Den Bosch striker Romero Regales, 30, spotted Jens and immediately ran towards the lad.
Putting his arm around the shoulder of Jens, he comforted the scared boy and escorted him off the pitch.
Other staffers of the home team could be seen comforting Jens while yet another firework bomb explodes.
A FC Den Bosch statement read: 'Jens was extremely scared and had a ringing in his ear, but after a visit from the club doctor he was quickly on his feet again. He watched the rest of the match with his parents from the sponsors' stand.
'We spoke extensively with Jens and his parents and agreed with them that Jens will be visited on a later occasion at home and will be rewarded with a present from the club. Luckily this raised a small smile again on his face.'
Local media reported that both public prosecutors and the Dutch FA are investigating the incident.
A club spokesman said: 'FC Den Bosch will give its full cooperation in the investigation.'
Local media reported that the firework bombs may have been thrown on the occasion of a visit by hooligans from Belgian outfit Standard Liege who are on friendly terms with the hardcore fans of FC Den Bosch.
The match was in the end restarted after 15 minutes, with Den Bosch winning with 1-0 thanks to a goal by Regales.
