The southern Paris suburb of Massy descended into violence for a third consecutive night as protesters took to the streets over the death of a teenager in a traffic accident. A video appeared online showing Molotov cocktails being thrown at parked vehicles.
Social media reports say the protest took place in the Massy commune, some 14km from central Paris. It was triggered by the death of a 17-year-old man identified by French media as Curtis on Friday. The teen, a local from Massy, was driving a quad bike without a helmet in the neighboring Antony commune. When spotted by Anti-Crime Brigade (BAC) officers, the driver reportedly tried to flee.
However, he crashed into a bus at “very high speed,” Catherine Denis, a local prosecutor said in a statement. The young man was taken to hospital in a serious condition, but later died of his injuries, she added.
In the wake of the accident, several dozen young people who blame the police for the teenager’s death took to the streets on Friday night to protest and clashes ensued.
